Privacy Policy — Selext

Selext is a browser extension that shows a small toolbar next to text you highlight on a web page. Clicking a button on that toolbar opens a new tab: either a Google search for the highlighted text, or ChatGPT with a prompt built from it. This policy explains what data the extension handles and what it does not do with it.

The short version

Selext has no servers of its own, no user accounts, and no analytics or tracking. It does not collect your data, send it to us, or sell or share it with anyone. It also stores nothing at all, not even settings: the extension has no database, no saved history of what you selected, and no cookies of its own. The only thing it ever does with your highlighted text is put it in the address of a tab you asked it to open.

What the extension handles, and where it goes

• The text you highlight. While a page is open, the extension reads your current selection so it knows whether to show the toolbar and whether the selection is short enough for each button. That text stays in the page's memory and goes nowhere until you click a button.
• When you click a button. The highlighted text is placed in the query string of a new tab and the tab is opened. For Search that address is on google.com; for Create image, Summarize and Explain it is on chatgpt.com, with a short instruction added in front of your text. This is the same data flow as typing that text into either site yourself. Nothing is sent anywhere else, and nothing is sent at all if you do not click.
• Nothing else on the page. The extension does not read page content beyond your selection, does not touch form fields or passwords, and makes no network requests of its own.
• A small helper on chatgpt.com. ChatGPT normally submits a prompt passed to it in a link. When it fills the message box without sending it, Selext presses Send once so your click is not wasted. That helper runs only on chatgpt.com, only when the page was opened with a prompt in the address, and does nothing during ordinary ChatGPT use.

What the extension does not do

• No data is sent to the developer — there is no Selext server.
• No analytics, telemetry, tracking, or advertising.
• No storage of any kind: no history of your selections, no settings, no local database.
• No collection of personal identifiers, passwords, credentials, financial or health information, location, or browsing history.
• No selling, renting, or sharing of your data with third parties.
• Your data is never used for any purpose beyond opening the tab you asked for, or for creditworthiness or lending.

Third-party services: Google and ChatGPT (OpenAI)

The buttons open ordinary pages on services you already use, in your own browser session. Text you send with the Search button reaches Google and is handled under Google's privacy policy. Text you send with the other three buttons reaches OpenAI as part of using ChatGPT, and is handled under OpenAI's privacy policy. Selext is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Google or OpenAI.

Data retention

There is nothing to retain. Selext keeps no copy of your selections and writes nothing to disk, so no data of yours accumulates in the extension and uninstalling it leaves nothing behind. Whatever you sent to Google or ChatGPT lives in your account with those services, under your control.

Permissions

Selext requests no browser permissions such as storage, downloads, history, or cookies. It asks for one thing only:

• Access to the pages you visit. People highlight text on any site, so the toolbar script has to be able to run on any page. Chrome describes this as reading and changing your data on all websites, which is the standard warning for any extension that works everywhere. In practice the script reads your current selection, draws the toolbar next to it, and nothing more.
